Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium renamed after Arun Jaitley, pavilion stand unveiled as Virat Kohli stand

DDCA renamed Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium as Arun Jaitley Stadium and unveiled pavilion stand as Virat Kohli stand in a renaming ceremony held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Thursday.

The Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) rechristened Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium as Arun Jaitley Stadium in a renaming ceremony which was held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Thursday.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah was the chief guest for the function, where a new pavilion stand at the stadium was also dedicated to India skipper Virat Kohli, to recognise his outstanding achievements in the field of cricket.

Bishan Singh Bedi and Mohinder Amarnath are the two other Delhi players who have stands after their names but the honour came their way after their retirements.

Kohli is the youngest active cricketer to be bestowed with the honour of a stand being named after him. “Virat Kohli’s outstanding contribution to world cricket has done DDCA proud. We are happy to honour him for achieving certain milestones and unbeatable captaincy record,” DDCA President Rajat Sharma had said in a statement.

The District Cricket Association (DDCA) had announced its decision on August 27, in a befitting tribute to the late union minister, who breathed his last at the age of 66 after a prolonged illness on August 24. However, the DDCA confirmed that the ground will continue to be called the Feroz Shah Kotla.

Speaking on this initiative, DDCA president Rajat Sharma said: “It was Arun Jaitley’s support and encouragement that players like Virat Kohli, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Ashish Nehra, Rishabh Pant and many others could make India proud.”

Jaitley, during his tenure at DDCA, is credited with renovating the stadium into a modern facility, increasing its capacity to accommodate more fans besides constructing world class dressing rooms.

Sports Minister Kiren Rijuju and Jaitley’s family members were also present at the function to commemorate Jaitley’s riveting contributions as a former DDCA president in cricket and careers of cricketers.
